Island Cruising Celebrates 40 Years with Landmark Anniversary Event at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron

Auckland, New Zealand – Saturday 29 November 2025 – Island Cruising marked a major milestone on Saturday night, celebrating its 40th birthday with a spectacular anniversary event at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Nearly 200 guests gathered to honour four decades of adventure, community, and unwavering support for the cruising lifestyle.

The evening brought together past and present leaders of Island Cruising, including former owners John and Lyn Martin, Nigel Richards, and current owner Viki Moore, reflecting the strong legacy and continuity that continues to shape the organisation today.

A special acknowledgement was also made to John and Leanne Hembrow, who sold the Down Under Rally to Viki Moore in 2023, expanding the Pacific Rally to include Australia.

Special guests at the party were long-time supporter Peter Mott from Passage Guardian along with his wife Angela. Peter maintains an active watch over the Pacific Rally fleet.  Also beloved volunteer broadcasters Patricia and David from Gulf Harbour Radio, all of whom were recognised for their outstanding and ongoing contributions to the cruising community.

Since Viki Moore took the helm in 2021, Island Cruising has experienced extraordinary growth and transformation. The Pacific Rally has expanded at an unprecedented rate—reaching an incredible 260 yachts in 2025. This remarkable achievement now makes the Pacific Rally the most popular rally in the world. Its flexible format enables cruisers to choose their own dates and destinations, while still being fully supported every step of the way.

“This celebration is about recognising all the people who have made Island Cruising what it is today,” said Viki Moore. “Our former owners, members, rally participants, sponsors,  supporters and my fabulous team – Cecile, Tara & Gemma, have created an incredible cruising community. Without them, none of this would be possible.”

Island Cruising also paid special tribute to its sponsors, whose generous support of the rally is much appreciated. Their backing—along with the great discounts, expertise, and practical knowledge they generously share with members and rally participants. Their involvement plays a crucial role in the success, safety, and enjoyment of every event.

Heartfelt thanks were also extended to Island Cruising’s many members and rally participants, whose shared spirit of adventure continues to drive the organisation forward. From first-time cruisers to seasoned ocean sailors, this strong and diverse community remains the foundation of Island Cruising’s success.

The 40th birthday celebration was a powerful reminder that Island Cruising is more than an organisation—it is a community built on shared experience, seamanship, adventure, and generosity of spirit.

As Island Cruising looks ahead to the future, the message from the night was clear: the next chapter promises even greater opportunity, connection, and adventure across the Pacific.
